The names may have changed since March 2, 1952, but our vision and philosophy has remained the same for nearly 65 years.
Because of that same vision, a group of local mine employees created Pickands Mather Federal Credit Union in an effort to form a financial cooperative to better serve their financial needs and those of their fellow co-workers.
After a few years and amended bylaws, the field of membership expanded to include employees of all the Pickands Mather Mines in Ironwood, Wakefield, Bessemer and Hurley and their immediate families. With a dedicated board of volunteers and staff, within 25 years of its creation and merging with Wakefield Co-op Credit Union, the Pickands Mather Employees Federal Credit Union eventually expanded membership to include persons who live or work in Gogebic County to become what we recognize today as the Gogebic County Federal Credit Union.
Today, GCFCU has grown to more than 3900 members strong and exceeds $17 million in assets as of March 31, 2016. Our growth and success comes from the support of our loyal members who use our services, a dedicated group of volunteers who are elected by our members to represent them, and a friendly staff who are committed to exceeding your member service expectations.
